What is CSA?

(Community Supported Agriculture)

CSA is a program that establishes a direct link between the farmer and the folks who consume that farmer’s products. The farmer commits to providing the consumer certain amounts of fresh food weekly, for a predetermined number of weeks per year, and the consumer finances his or her share in advance. This program cuts out the middlemen, the long-distance transportation, storage, handling and related loss of nutrients. The consumer receives the freshest possible produce and the assurance that it was produced in a healthy manner using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The farmer benefits from a reliable income.

Happy Hen Farm, near Rochester, owned and operated by Lee and Ora Jacobson, practices sustainable agriculture. This means we only use natural fertilizers and pesticides and techniques that conserve soil and water quality. The result is fresh food full of nutrients. Our chickens are free range having a large yard with grass to search out treats that Mother Nature provides. This supplements their purchased organic feed. The breeds of chickens we keep lay lovely eggs varying from light to dark brown. These eggs will be the best tasting you’ve ever had as well as the most nutritious.

What you can expect

In 2010 we will be offering two types of CSA programs.

A - “Farmer’s Choice” - we select the contents of your weekly share.

B - “Subscriber’s Choice” - you select the contents of your weekly share from our online farm stand located at: www.wholly.locallygrown.net.

If you select “Farmer’s Choice”

We will provide plentiful quantities of fruits and vegetables grown at Happy Hen Farm, occasionally supplemented with produce from fellow area farmers. Our Full share will feed 2 - 3 vegetable loving adults while our Half share is designed for folks who live alone or a couple with smaller appetites.

Greens and cool weather crops predominate in the spring, and variety increases as the weather warms.

A vegetable cookbook will start off your season of good eating.

Since our flock of chickens is small we are unable to guarantee eggs to all members on a weekly basis. With that in mind our 2010 season offers the following options:

Full Share - produce only

Full Share - produce & eggs

Half Share - produce only with occasional eggs.

If you select “Subscriber’s Choice”

Weekly you will “shop” at our virtual farm stand choosing from the list of available produce. You will be able to order the quantity that fits your family’s needs (as long as supply lasts). We will custom harvest your share. The cost of your purchases will be deducted from your CSA account. With this plan you spend your subscription dollars your way over the 22 week season.

Whichever plan you select you will receive our weekly newsletter letting you know what is happening at “your” farm.

Our 2010 season will last for 22 weeks from May 6th - Sept. 30th.

See Cost & Payment Schedule for appropriate fees for both plans.

Delivery to your home or office

We will deliver your share to your home or office (for folks living or working within the city limits of Lacey, Olympia and Tumwater) each Thursday afternoon. For people living outside that geographic area delivery arrangements will be made on a case to case basis.

If you join together with neighbors or fellow office workers enabling us to make multiple deliveries to one address the cost of delivery will be shared.

You may also choose the option of picking up your weekly share at the farm on either Thursday or Saturday.
