2010 CSA

We are now accepting membership for our 2010 CSA season. This year we are offering two different programs.

A - "Farmer's Choice" - we select the contents of your weekly share.

B - "Subscriber's Choice" - you select the contents of your weekly share from our online farm stand located at : www.wholly.locallygrown.net.

If you are not familiar with a CSA program a brief description follows.

What is CSA?(Community Supported Agriculture)

CSA is a program that establishes a direct link between the farmer and the folks who consume that farmer’s products. The farmer commits to providing the consumer certain amounts of fresh food weekly, for a predetermined number of weeks per year, and the consumer finances his or her share in advance. This program cuts out the middlemen, the long-distance transportation, storage, handling and related loss of nutrients. The consumer receives the freshest possible produce and the assurance that it was produced in a healthy manner using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The farmer benefits from a reliable income.

Happy Hen Farm, near Rochester, owned and operated by Lee and Ora Jacobson, practices sustainable agriculture. Our chickens are free range, having a large yard with grass to search out treats that Mother Nature provides. This supplements their regular feed.

Happy New Year to all! This time of year a lettuce harvest like the one above is only in our minds but we are busy putting together our 2010 seed order knowing seeding, ground preparation, transplanting and weeding aren't too far off. We begin seeding in mid-January in order to have greens available when the Olympia Farmers Market opens the first weekend in April.

A heartfelt thank you to all for your wonderful support of our efforts during 2009. We had a good year at the market and a terrific year with our CSA season and the number of members who have renewed tells us folks were also pleased. As to my weaving sales; I can't believe it! I've never had a year when I've completely SOLD OUT of towels but that was what happened this past holiday season.Thank you, thank you. I've been busily weaving new ones and just posted six of them.

The good December sales offset the extremely cold weather which froze half of our seed potatoes. This was right on the heels of neighborhood roaming dogs who chewed their way into our chicken coop one night and killed 45 of the 50 young pullets we were raising for spring egg production. On the positive side both Lee and I are in good health, the roof isn't leaking and the hoophouses have not collapsed so we continue to put one foot in front of the other and plan for the new year. One of the plans we will start on as soon as Hannah returns to work on Jan. 12th is the installation of what we hope will be a dog proof fence; a combination of field fencing and hot wire. We will be ordering replacement chicks as soon as the hatchery has them available and broiler/fryer chicks in March.

A reminder that you are always welcome to visit the farm to see how your vegetables are raised and say hi to the Happy Hens. It's a good idea to call and let us know you'll be stopping by as occasionally we do put on some clean jeans and go to town.

The Studio at our farm offers retail sales for Ora's & Lees' creations. Contact us via email or phone: 360-273-8788 for custom orders. Message machine picks up after the 4th ring.

Our farm is located at: 8620 - 180th Way SW, Rochester, WA 98579. Driving directions: Take Exit 88 off I5. At the signal (about one block west of the freeway) turn right. Left at 196th, right at Sargent, left at 183rd (about 2 miles), right at the third street (Empire), left at the next street (180th Way SW). You will see our Happy Hen Farm sign at the corner. We are the first driveway on the right. Follow the scarecrow's pointing finger. Studio and farmstand are about 200' down the driveway.

We are now accepting members for our 2010 CSA season.

In our farm stand we provide bags;both plastic & paper, as well as a scale for weighing your purchases.
