2010 CSA

We are now accepting membership for our 2010 CSA season. This year we are offering two different programs.

A - "Farmer's Choice" - we select the contents of your weekly share.

B - "Subscriber's Choice" - you select the contents of your weekly share from our online farm stand located at : www.wholly.locallygrown.net.

If you are not familiar with a CSA program a brief description follows.

What is CSA?(Community Supported Agriculture)

CSA is a program that establishes a direct link between the farmer and the folks who consume that farmer’s products. The farmer commits to providing the consumer certain amounts of fresh food weekly, for a predetermined number of weeks per year, and the consumer finances his or her share in advance. This program cuts out the middlemen, the long-distance transportation, storage, handling and related loss of nutrients. The consumer receives the freshest possible produce and the assurance that it was produced in a healthy manner using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The farmer benefits from a reliable income.

Happy Hen Farm, near Rochester, owned and operated by Lee and Ora Jacobson, practices sustainable agriculture. Our chickens are free range, having a large yard with grass to search out treats that Mother Nature provides. This supplements their regular feed.

Follow this link to our 2010 CSA brochure and application form. Thank you for your interest.

Fresh From The Farm

We have added two baby goats to the farm. Since we plan to have these fellows for meat we decided to name them food related names.I suggested "Curry" for one so Lee thought the other should be called "Powder". That first day neither of them was interested in that yucky rubber nipple or the 8 oz. of milk in the bottle. Two days later they were eager eaters and begging for more. As of this writing they are a month old and drinking 24 oz. of milk per feeding plus beginning to graze as well as eat hay and really growing. Their antics keep us constantly amused.

A reminder that you are always welcome to visit the farm to see how your vegetables are raised and say hi to the Happy Hens and the kids as well as the new chicks. We do occasionally put on clean clothes and go to town so it is a good idea to call (360-273-8788)or email first to be certain we will be home.

The first week in February we got 50 chicks to replace those we lost to dogs (or perhaps coyotes) in early December 2009. They are in a pen in the greenhouse and growing well. At this stage of their development they are doing their Orville & Wilbur Wright version of flight, i.e. very short distances and not far off the ground. The first week in March received 50 fryer chicks. This is a new venture for Happy Hen Farm which evolved from our desire to eat healthy chicken not the Frankenbirds that are being sold at the grocery stores. We decided to raise a few of these pastured chickens to sell and put out the word. The response was amazing. We had to stop taking orders because 47 of the 50 sold so fast that we might have ended up with none for us. This prompted us to offer a second batch to the public to be available Sept. 1st. Orders are rolling in for those as well. If you are interested send us an email to happyhenfarm@earthlink.net and we'll see that you get a brochure about our "Pasture Raised Poultry".

We still have space for more CSA subscribers for the 2010 season. Also our virtual farmstand www.wholly.locallygrown.net is operational. Currently the product offering is slim but as spring comes it will increase weekly.

The Studio at our farm offers retail sales for Ora's & Lees' creations. Contact us via email or phone: 360-273-8788 for custom orders. Message machine picks up after the 4th ring.

Our farm is located at: 8620 - 180th Way SW, Rochester, WA 98579. Driving directions: Take Exit 88 off I5. At the signal (about one block west of the freeway) turn right. Left at 196th, right at Sargent, left at 183rd (about 2 miles), right at the third street (Empire), left at the next street (180th Way SW). You will see our Happy Hen Farm sign at the corner. We are the first driveway on the right. Follow the scarecrow's pointing finger. Studio and farmstand are about 200' down the driveway.
