Fresh From The Farm

2009 CSA Fully Subscribed Thank you for your interest. We will be accepting memberships for 2010 in October.

What is CSA?(Community Supported Agriculture)

CSA is a program that establishes a direct link between the farmer and the folks who consume that farmer’s products. The farmer commits to providing the consumer certain amounts of fresh food weekly, for a predetermined number of weeks per year, and the consumer finances his or her share in advance. This program cuts out the middlemen, the long-distance transportation, storage, handling and related loss of nutrients. The consumer receives the freshest possible produce and the assurance that it was produced in a healthy manner using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The farmer benefits from a reliable income.

Happy Hen Farm, near Rochester, owned and operated by Lee and Ora Jacobson, practices sustainable agriculture. Our chickens are free range, having a large yard with grass to search out treats that Mother Nature provides. This supplements their regular feed.

Here is a photo of one of our existing hoophouses. This year this house will be planted with basil. We have found with our mild Western Washington climate the heat loving vegetables; basil, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, really benefit from being planted in these plastic covered hoophouses where they get extra warmth and protection from the wind. This year we are adding four new hoophouses. The photo below shows Lee and our helper, Brian, framing the end for one of the new houses.

We have all of our planting areas set up on drip irrigation. This system uses minimal water putting it only where needed. One of Lee's biggest chores each spring is installing the drip tape in all of our planting areas. We increased the growing space by 50% this year so he was happy to have our helper Hannah to assist him.

Our new pullets just started laying. Isn't the "practice" egg cute. Won't be long and they'll be up to marketable size.

The Studio at our farm offers retail sales for Ora's & Lees' creations. Contact us via email or phone: 360-273-8788 for custom orders. Message machine picks up after the 4th ring.
